Over the past year, Trinity third grader, Emmy H has been finding ways to show her thankfulness to first responders in our community. It all started last December, when Emmy left a note stating that all she wanted for Christmas was to take pizza to the police officers for keeping us safe. On December 24th, Emmy and her family bought pizza from Godfathers and delivered it to the Springfield Police Department.

Her mission continued this summer when she set up a lemonade stand to raise money to buy ice cream for the Police Department. Emmy raised enough money to buy ice cream for local firefighters as well! She purchased popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cones to take to Springfield Fire Department Station 3 and the Springfield Police Department.

While at the Fire Department, Emmy learned about the sad passing of a local Paramedic due to the heavy burdens of the job. This broke her heart. She wanted to let the first responders know that they are not alone. Emmy asked if she could create care packages with snacks, drink packets, and notes to take to local Police, Fire, EMS and Healthcare workers. She also wanted to include a coin in the package that they could carry in their pocket. Each coin is engraved with the message, “You’re Not Alone” and includes the Crisis Hotline phone number.

In recognition of her efforts, Emmy has been nominated for the Good Samaritan Award with the American Legion! On September 6th, she will be interviewed at the Springfield American Legion Post and share more information about the history and purpose of her mission. Her interview will be submitted to the National Committee, who will vote on the 2022 winner of the award.

Emmy says that she was inspired by God, her family, her teachers and her friends to do something for our first responders. She wants the community to come together and support our local Police, Fire, EMS and Healthcare workers. In the future she is hoping to expand this project to other departments outside of our area.
